Dr. Sheldon’s Recipes – Dr. Mattai’s Lentils

It’s probably no surprise that Dr. Mattai makes AMAZING Indian food. Here’s the simple, tasty and healthy recipe for her lentils. Enjoy.

Dr. Mattai’s Lentils

1.5-2 cups mixed lentils (ex: brown, orange, green)
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp turmeric
7-8 garlic cloves, 5 peeled and left whole, 2-3, chopped fine
1/2 tsp garam masala
1/2 tsp whole cumin seeds
1-2 TBSP olive oil

  1. Put lentils in a pot and add water to 1-2 inches above the lentils. Add the whole garlic cloves, the salt, turmeric and garam masala.
  2. Bring to a boil, then cook over a low to medium-low flame, adding more water as needed if it looks too dry. Cook for 45 minutes – 1hr until all the lentils are cooked and tender and some have dissolved. Toward the end of the cooking time, mash any remaining garlic pieces against the side of the pot so they dissolve as well.
  3. Heat the olive oil in a separate small frying pan. Add the chopped garlic and the cumin seeds and sauté over a low heat until fragrant. Don’t let the garlic brown.
  4. Stir garlic/cumin mixture gently into lentils and serve.
